At Allied Veterinary Care, our greatest concern is the well-being of your pet. Your pet has been scheduled for an anesthetic procedure. You will be scheduled a time to drop your pet off the morning of the procedure. After answering any questions you might have, we will obtain your pet's vital signs and current weight to work up an anesthetic protocol that is tailored to your pet's individual circumstances.
Pre-anesthetic blood work is required for any pet going under general anesthesia prior to a procedure. This consists of a complete blood cell count (CBC) and chemistry panel to help rule out any anesthetic restrictions. Depending on the results of the blood work, the surgery may need to be canceled. If your pet has not had blood work in the past six weeks, we may need to run blood tests again unless otherwise directed by the veterinarian. The doctor will also perform a brief exam on your pet the morning of the procedure to identify if there are any reasons why further testing or cancellation of the procedure might be necessary.
An IV catheter will be placed prior to the procedure for all pets having major surgery under general anesthesia. This allows us to maintain your pet's blood pressure by using IV fluids during the operation and provides direct access to your pet's bloodstream in case of an emergency. We utilize state-of-the-art equipment to monitor your pet's vital signs while under anesthesia.
In addition to its use during and after all surgical and dental procedures, pain medication may also be prescribed to ensure your pet is comfortable at home.
Your pet's recovery will be monitored for a few hours after waking up from anesthesia before being sent home with you. You will receive a phone call from our office after your pet's procedure is complete to arrange for discharge and pick up.
